This book is not so much an art book as it is a book to commemorate the beauty of the movie. I know that sounds confusing. When I think art book, I think of a book that has a bunch of production art, concept art, things that never made it in the movie, multiple versions of things that did appear in the movie, and how they got to where they were in the movie. This book did have some concept art, but the majority of it was screen-captures of the movie itself. It's a nice reference to the movie so you can see the beauty of the art in the movie without having to watch it, but it just didn't have enough concept to fully satisfy me. What concept was in there was fantastic though.Overall it was a beautiful movie and lends beauty magnificently in an art book. So, if you liked the art of the movie and wouldn't mind to reference it without watching the whole thing, this is a great companion piece. If you want a book of production art and see how it all evolved from thought to movie this may not be the best book to use.Covers every step of the animation step in chronological order to the movie. Background paintings give good clear color images of background images and take up most of the page. This is an exceptional product. It arrived in mint condition - it even smelled like a new book. Breath-taking imagery is placed side by side with crude pencil drawings that highlight some of the sequences in the film. I only wish that I understood Japanese so I could make the most of the book.I wish there was more concept art instead of screen shots, but this is still a great purchase. Also, it is in Japanese. The good? The paper and print quality will not let you down. The book is big and well organized.HOWEVER! There is a LOT of text and not so much actual artwork. If you can't read Japanese you might not appreciate the book as much.My favorite part of the book was to see screencaptures of specific scenes where they show the initial B&W drawing outline, the hand painted base color, the digital retouches and then the final sometimes several layers of CGI for shadowing to make those special effect scenes so epic. It just shows how much work Hayao put to make this classic film and the reason why he doesn't direct as many films as before because it's a lot of work. This is another great title from Studio Ghibli. I'm not sure if this is part of the Studio Ghibli Library series as my title is in Japanese. There is a an English version of this book, and it is also out of print and getting quite expensive. This title is paperback (probably considered hardback in Asia) with a dust cover. It is 224 pages and the images are beautiful and printed very nicely on excellent paper stock. The book is divided into the following chapters (I will just give descriptors as I don't read Japanese):Artwork (includes sketches, cel art, concept art etc)Computer Graphics (multi layer composite, digital ink & paintingStoryboardsI can't say much about the text as it is in Japanese, but the images are what you'd expect if you have the other Studio Ghibli Library titles.I wish I could read Japanese because the section on Computer Graphics looks very good.Highly recommended. As the title says, it's a perfect book for Studio Ghibli fans. The book is entirely in Japanese except for a poem in the beginning and a few words throughout the book. It features pencil drawings, rough art, and the CGI process for some of the images in the movie.
